Mine is a single thick ply of walnut, 8x14”. Sounds excellent, aggressive, fat, low and loud. It gives me the sound I need to play metal with satanic force
I bought this due to the look and was looking for that extra something. Well this is it. The plus and the holes of the drum make it to where I can pierce through any music and it is versatile in most applications I play. Plus, I have to admit that I do dread playing it sometimes because it just looks cool and I don’t want anything to happen to it. Awesome drum and awesome company.
Absolute dream of a snare when tuned well. This snare has made me a believer in this product
This is one of my favorite go to drums in a 6.5 x 14 it's extreme volume works very well for rock and metal type music it's very versatile in low mid and high tuning ranges and anything in between this drum I've used in studio and live settings and I think one of my favorite snares to use its a heavy drum so you really need a sturdy stand for it the look is stunning the brass and chrome go together almost like a fine antique piece and has a sort of steam punk look to it I myself use a remo coated sound control dot batter head with a remo clear ambassador snare bottom with puresound steel 20 strand wires the sound I get out of the drum I feel has more control with those heads and the brass shell really brings out the depth and low end resonance has fairly long sustain but doesn't have alot of those nasty overtones you can tune this drum incredibly high and it never seems to choke the sound this drum also when tuned low it still sounds great without losing any punch as I said before the best part of this drum sound is the volume and cut of the attack especially with doing rim shots mid tuning carries a bit of overtones but I use a sweetspot dampening and it helps to reduce it substantially you can get a very crisp sound out of this drum and even defined ghost notes don't get los the build quality is absolutely amazing the shell perfectly round and bearing edges cut perfect the lugs on it and hardware are above and beyond great and the craftsmanship is of the highest standard this is definitely a drum that will stand the test of time..
This has such a great sound! Crisp, yet fat and full with a nice underlying tone
it can sound vintage with a twist, but also surprisingly punchy, love the thin maple shells with the rounded bearing edges, gives me exactly the sound I was looking for, and the looks are stunning to, classic simplicity at its finest. Full 5 stars from a proud owner
I was lucky enough to find this Spaun Custom Piano kit at my local Guitar Center for $1,000. I had to contain my excitement long enough for them to throw in new batter and reso heads for all 3. I absolutely love the sound, quality, and attention to detail put into these drums. 4 stars for value because yes they are expensive when bought new.
I'd ordered this monster last year, or so. Waited for it to arrive and when it did; tuned it to perfection and 'pounded the crap of it' while mainly staying in tempo. :)
Truth is, THIS snare is wonderful: great, best ever rim shots; great for hard rock; and, in my case, jazz with the odd offbeat. . .
Stellar, all the way; AND, with every style of music, imo. Albeit hefty, the tones outta this snare are often so unlike most commercial stuff. . . /smh
Sure, you may not like it. It can be temperamental, but so can most drummers. -No lie, this snare won't be one of those, "It's okay", kind of snares. This snare mixes well, and can be easily heard in the back of nearly any room, even without amplification.
You wanna beat on it? Great. You wanna tease it with a brush? Works either way.
I played one of these at the Spaun shop and it's the best Rock Snare I've ever heard. It's versatile too. Great ballad drum and overall cutting live drum for all occasions. Heavy! Extremely well made.
This is a great drum. I got one and asked for a 4" depth with the resonant lugs and it's absolutely amazing. My favorite, and currently have 8 snare drums. Nothing like it and I'm thinking about more changes to my kit in the future. The Spaun kits are really fantastic. Brian is the Man!
I bought my kit from the original owner and its a 12-14-16-18-24 with matching snare! Its the best drum kit I've ever owned and its a real head turner at gigs. people don't believe that its painted and not a wrap.
I bought a slightly different hardware version of this snare drum...Let me just say the craftsmanship and attention to detail is amazing (even if my drum was a fairly straight build). It has a very good tuning range for being a vented drum and with being a 40 ply shell. When tuned up fairly high it has a very ear piercing crack to it and the rim shots I do sound like a firecracker maybe even a M100 lol. I have over 30 snare drums all various makes, sizes and brands..This by far is my favorite one so far to use live and in the studio. This drum is my go to snare so far..Thanks Brian for a great drum at a very reasonable price !!
I have been in the market for a new kit for a while and while I was looking for something of value, I was also looking for an amazing kit that I could truly call my own. I tried a number of folks. Noble and Cooley, SJC, C&C, Barton, etc and with all of them, I had a hard time getting through to get the answers I needed. With Spaun, I spoke with Brian directly on my first phone call and not only was he professional but he shared my desire for the end result. He was informative, helpful and provided a great insight on the build from start to finish. I couldn't be happier with the service.
As for the product, ZERO disappointments. The build and sound is everything you can expect. These drums sing! Great tuning range and kick has beautiful warm thump that you want. I am so used to getting cheap stock heads from other on the shelf brands that it totally went past my head that the kit from Spaun came with an Evans EMAD batter for the kick with a branded ported reso. The finish is spot on! The pics do not quite do it service because in the light the grain REALLY pops. I think I spent a good hour looking at her as I was unpacking it for the first time. Beautiful warm tones on the toms and perfect sustain for what I was looking for. The drums are VERY responsive which is perfect for Remo coated single ply or lighter dual ply heads that I normally use.
As for value....Its a premium/custom kit! You are going to spend some money but the easy4pay makes it so easy to finally get that perfect kit. So easy in fact, I am already looking into a snare and maybe a more simplified studio kit down the line. In terms of value, if you considered something comparable (DW Collectors, Noble&Cooley, etc), you would still spend more. Also when you consider the level of service Brian provides, he made this an absolute pleasure, start to finish. I couldn't be happier!
End note: The Designer series is a smash hit for me! Providing you have a good fundamental knowledge of wood species and their character, you can truly build a kit just for you that can serve you a lifetime. Whatever you don't know, Brian will be happy to explain and make a good call for your preferred sound pallet (For instance, I gave him some creative licensing on the bearing edges and he nailed it.). Brian makes the experience truly a personal one and delivered above and beyond! Thank you again, sir! We will DEFINATELY be doing business again!
I play this snare 3-5 times a week. Always on point. Versatile. Rock, Blues and Country. Love it.
Had this set for a few years now. Shouldn’t have taken so long to review, but this is the best set I’ve had! Sound is fantastic! Graphics are unbelievable!
The store lit up when I took them out of the box!
Bass is like a cannon. Can’t say enough. I’ve been playing since classic rock was Top 40 and this set is the Greatest!!!!
